We all want clear, glowing skin. But how do we get it? While there are many external factors that can affect the appearance of your skin—from genetics to cleansing regimen—there is one factor you may not have considered: the food you eat. Believe it or not, what you put in your body can play a huge role in the quality of your skin. Read on to learn more about how to eat for healthy skin.

What to Eat

First and foremost, eating for healthy skin means making sure you get plenty of nutrients. Vitamins A and C are known for their skin-boosting benefits; Vitamin A helps regulate cell turnover, while Vitamin C promotes collagen production, which keeps skin looking youthful and plump. You can find these vitamins in foods like sweet potatoes, oranges, carrots, tomatoes, and blueberries. Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids help keep your complexion hydrated and supple; try adding salmon or sardines to your diet if you’re looking for a good source of these fatty acids.

What to Avoid

Just as important as what to eat is what not to eat when it comes to maintaining healthy skin. Processed foods tend to be high in sugar and saturated fats; both of these can lead to inflammation and an increase in breakouts. If you’re looking to reduce acne or eczema flare-ups, avoiding processed and fried foods is key! It’s also important to watch out for dairy products; dairy contains hormones that can cause increased sebum production (the oily substance that clogs pores).

Try switching out cow’s milk with nut milk instead if you’re looking for an alternative with fewer side effects on the skin. I also suggest having raw, hard cheeses like parmesan or cheddar.  These have enzymes that breakdown in the body easier as well as digestive benefits.

Eating for healthy skin means loading up on vitamins A & C as well as omega-3 fatty acids while avoiding processed goods with high levels of sugar and saturated fat such as processed and fried foods.
